I have a standard graphics adapter on my computer,I sometimes get an error message after installing a game,?

The message says 'cannot find 3D hardware acceleration on primary display device..." Do I have to buy one and how do I tell what is needed before I download and install,I have never noticed it mentioned in system requirements ?
