Is the keyboard a good instrument to learn?

Is the keyboard a good instrument to learn and what sort of time scale would it be before i could be playing to a reasonable standard.Also any recommendations for a keyboard for a total beginner something with touch sensitive keys would be good.Are keyboards seen as a legitimate instrument or a toy.
