What are the temporary effects of dip tobacco (Why would someone do it)?

I have a friend who dips tobacco. I don't even know exactly what that means. But I wonder why he would do it.. so, like Ibuprofen relieves head aches and pains, what are the temporary effects of dip tobacco? Thanks in advance <3
